Patricia Dombrowski, known as Patti Cake$, is a young woman from a small New Jersey town who raps under the name Killa P and dreams of making it in hip-hop. She lives with her grandmother, helps care for her mother Barb, a former singer whose own career never worked out, and works a job she dislikes. Ridiculed for her weight and her background, she finds support in her grandmother and in two friends: Jheri, her rap partner, and Basterd, a solitary musician. Together they pursue a chance at recognition in a scene that offers few openings to someone like her.
The film was written and directed by Geremy Jasper as his first feature, followed in his career by O'Dessa. Danielle Macdonald plays Patricia opposite Bridget Everett, Siddharth Dhananjay, Mamoudou Athie and Cathy Moriarty, with twenty-two credited cast members in all. Chris Columbus, Daniela Taplin Lundberg and Rodrigo Teixeira produced the drama with music, made across Brazil, the United Kingdom and the United States, and running 109 minutes.
Released in August 2017, the film brought in about one million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.8 out of 10 from roughly 11,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.6 out of 10 from a much smaller pool of 216. A critics' rating of 7.3 out of 10 across 168 reviews places it somewhat above the audience scores.
