Toward the end of the First World War, a French officer named Pradelle orders an attack that serves no purpose and ends in slaughter. In the chaos, Édouard Péricourt, a wealthy young artist serving as a soldier, saves the life of Albert Maillard, a former postal worker. Édouard is gravely wounded in the process, and when he returns home he hides himself behind a mask rather than face his family. The two men, who share little beyond the war, stay together as they try to make a place for themselves in a country putting itself back together. Albert becomes the business partner of the man behind the mask, and their scheme targets the memorials a grieving nation is erecting for its dead.
Albert Dupontel directed and co-wrote the film, adapting Pierre Lemaitre's novel with the author. It followed The Villain and 9 Month Stretch in Dupontel's work as a director and came before Bye Bye Morons. He also appears as Albert, alongside Nahuel Pérez Biscayart as Édouard; Laurent Lafitte, Niels Arestrup, Émilie Dequenne and Mélanie Thierry are among the twenty-seven credited cast. The production, mounted by Catherine Bozorgan, cost roughly 23 million dollars and returned about 15 million worldwide. On IMDb and on TMDB it holds a rating of 7.8 from 1,382 votes, while film critics gave it 7.3 from 17 reviews, so audiences rate it slightly higher than the critics did.
