Set in the early second century CE, Gautamiputra Satakarni centres on the ruler of the Satavahana kingdom, who faces pressure on several fronts. His wife, Vashishthee Devi, is reluctant to accept that their son is destined for war and must confront the kingdom's enemies, and the couple's disagreement unfolds against a wider struggle to defend their land from invaders. The film is a historical action drama from India, with battles and court conflict shaping the story.
Krish Jagarlamudi directed and wrote the screenplay, working with producers Jagarlamudi Saibabu, Y. Rajeev Reddy and Suhasini Panguluri. It was the third film he directed, following Krishnam Vande Jagadgurum in 2012 and Gabbar Is Back in 2015. Nandamuri Balakrishna plays the title role, with Shriya Saran as Vashishthee Devi, Hema Malini as Gautami Balashri and Kabir Bedi as Nahapana. Shivaraj Kumar appears in a cameo as Kalahasteeshwara, and David Blazejko plays an assassin.
Released in January 2017, the film runs 135 minutes. Made for about 6 million USD, it took roughly 12 million USD worldwide, a return that indicates a solid commercial performance for its budget. On IMDb it holds 6.3/10 from around 2,800 votes, while on TMDB it has 5.3/10 from a much smaller number of votes.
