Short description
Lake Victoria, Arizona, is a quiet town that swells each spring when thousands of students arrive for the annual Spring Break party. A sudden earthquake tears open a fissure beneath the lake and frees a swarm of prehistoric piranhas that had long lain dormant in the depths. With the celebrations underway on the water, the sheriff, Julie Forester, her deputies and the scientist Raybanks must act quickly to keep the crowd from becoming prey.
Alexandre Aja directed the film, the fourth in his filmography following High Tension, The Hills Have Eyes and Mirrors. Josh Stolberg wrote the screenplay, and Mark Canton, Grégory Levasseur and Aja produced. Elisabeth Shue plays Julie, with Jerry O'Connell as the adult filmmaker Derrick Jones, Steven R. McQueen as her son Jake, Jessica Szohr as Kelly, Kelly Brook as Danni and Ving Rhames as Deputy Fallon. It is a comedic horror film made on a budget of 24 million dollars, and its worldwide gross of 83 million dollars shows it found a sizable audience despite mixed word of mouth. On IMDb viewers rate it 5.5 out of 10 from about 102,000 votes, and on TMDB it sits at 5.4 from roughly 2,460 votes, while the critics' rating of 6.3 from 131 reviews is noticeably higher than either audience figure.
What's left behind the scenes
- In one scene, Jake Forester (Steve R. McQueen) tells his mother, "Mom, everything will be alright, we'll sit down, watch something, like "Jaws" (1975), for example." This reference is a tribute to Richard Dreyfuss, who starred in "Jaws" in 1975. In "Piranha," the actor played Matt Boyd, a fisherman and the first victim of the bloodthirsty fish.
- Aleksandr Aja planned to invite safety instructors Joe Dante (director of the original film) and James Cameron (director of the sequel) to appear in cameo roles. Dante agreed, but Cameron was too busy.
- The film's premiere was originally scheduled for April 16, 2010, but was then postponed twice due to a protracted post-production process.
- When Deputy Fallon (Weng Raims) runs out of shotgun shells, he readily grabs the boat motor to hack the piranhas to pieces, completely forgetting about the .357 caliber revolver hanging on his belt.
- American porn actress Gina played a cameo role in the film.
