A wave of newborn kidnappings plagues Hong Kong, and the police, led by Inspector Lau, are powerless to stop it. The culprit is Ching, a woman who can make herself invisible and who steals the infants on behalf of a sinister master. Two other women with extraordinary abilities stand against her: Tung, who fights to end the abductions and has a personal stake in stopping the phantom, and Chat, a thief catcher whose knowledge of the criminal underworld proves useful to the authorities. The three find their paths crossing as the case pulls them toward a confrontation none of them expected.
The Heroic Trio was directed by Johnnie To, the fourth of 23 films he has directed in chronological order, following Justice, My Foot! and preceding Heroic Trio 2: Executioners. Sandy Shaw wrote the screenplay, with To and Tony Ching Siu-Tung producing. Anita Mui, Michelle Yeoh and Maggie Cheung star as Tung, Ching and Chat, alongside Damian Lau Chung-Yan, Anthony Wong and James Pax among a credited cast of 22. The film blends action, fantasy and science fiction elements across its 88-minute runtime.
Released in Hong Kong in February 1993, the film took in about 20 million US dollars worldwide. Ratings are moderate and consistent across audiences, at 6.6 out of 10 on IMDb from around 5,300 votes and 6.7 out of 10 on TMDB from a much smaller base. A film critics' rating of 6.7 out of 10 from 16 reviews places it in line with those viewer scores.
