Stockholm
Short description
Stockholm is a comedy-crime film set in the Swedish capital in 1973, built around the bank robbery and hostage standoff that gave rise to the psychological term "Stockholm Syndrome." A gunman takes several bank employees captive inside a vault, and as the siege drags on over several days, the line between captor and captive blurs. The hostages begin to side with the robber against the police, a shift that confounds the authorities trying to end the standoff.
Robert Budreau wrote and directed the film, his second feature after Born to Be Blue in 2015 and before Queen of Bones in 2025. Ethan Hawke plays the robber Lars Nystrom, with Noomi Rapace as bank employee Bianca Lind and Mark Strong as Gunnar Sorensson. The supporting cast includes Christopher Heyerdahl, Bea Santos and Mark Rendall, among 36 credited performers. The film is a Canadian, American and Swedish co-production from Blumhouse Productions, Darius Films, Productivity Media and Chimney Sweden.
Receiving a mixed response, Stockholm holds a critics' rating of 6 out of 10 from 84 reviews, broadly in line with its audience scores: 6.1 out of 10 on IMDb from around 16,000 votes and 5.9 out of 10 on TMDB from roughly 455 votes. Running 92 minutes, it mixes the tension of a siege with comedic touches across its account of the six-day event.
What's left behind the scenes
- Due to the fact that a large number of people mentioned in the film were still alive at the time of writing the screenplay, all names had to be changed. The only exception was Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme, who is shown under his own name.
- The film is based on real events that led to the emergence of the term "Stockholm syndrome".
