Journey's End

In the final spring of the First World War, a company of British officers occupies a frontline dugout in northern France, waiting for a German offensive they know is coming. Among them is Captain Stanhope, who has been worn down by years of command and drinks heavily to cope with the strain. A young lieutenant, Raleigh, arrives straight from training and is eager to serve under Stanhope, a man he admired at school and whose sister he knows. What Raleigh finds is a commander very different from the one he remembers, and the days of waiting take their toll on everyone in the trench.

The film is directed by Saul Dibb, following The Duchess (2008) and Suite Française (2015), from a screenplay by Simon Reade, who also produced with Guy de Beaujeu. Asa Butterfield plays Raleigh and Sam Claflin plays Stanhope, with Paul Bettany, Tom Sturridge, Toby Jones and Stephen Graham among the officers and men sharing the dugout. The production is British, with a credited cast of 26 and a crew of 91.

Journey's End was released in December 2017 and runs 108 minutes. It holds a 6.7 rating on IMDb from around 12,000 votes and a 6.3 on TMDB from over 300 votes, while critics gave it 7.5 from 101 reviews, a warmer response than that of general audiences.
