Short description

I'm Still Here documents a turbulent year in the life of Joaquin Phoenix. Starting in the fall of 2008, the film follows the actor as he announces his departure from the movie industry to pursue a career as a hip-hop musician. The narrative focuses on his attempt to reinvent himself creatively while dealing with the pressures of fame and public scrutiny. As he makes increasingly unusual public appearances and promotes the film Two Lovers, his behavior draws both concern and ridicule from the entertainment world, all while his brother-in-law records the events.

The film marks the directorial debut of Casey Affleck, who also appears in the cast alongside Phoenix and Jack Nicholson. Written by Affleck and Phoenix, the production was handled by They Are Going To Kill Us Productions in the United States. It is the first of three films directed by Affleck, followed by Light of My Life in 2019 and Company in 2026.

The film ends with Joaquin Phoenix and his father drinking beer. The role of the father was played by Casey Affleck's father.
This is impossible to understand from the film itself, but rapper and music producer Sean 'P. Diddy' Combs approached filming the movie with unprecedented enthusiasm. It took only one meeting and conversation with Joaquin Phoenix and Casey Affleck to persuade him to play himself. All scenes with Combs were improvised.
In the initial version of the film, the scene where Joaquin Phoenix travels down the river was almost 3 minutes longer, but Casey Affleck decided it was too much.
