Another Year
Short description
Another Year follows Tom and Gerri, a happily married couple approaching retirement, over the course of four seasons. Their life together is settled and warm, centred on their allotment, quiet meals and the company of friends and relatives. The people around them are less at ease: Gerri's colleague Mary, a fragile woman in her forties, has grown dependent on their friendship, while Tom's old friend Ken is lonely and adrift. Visits, dinners and conversations over the year bring affection and irritation, hope and disappointment, as the couple's contentment sits alongside the unhappiness of those who come into their home.
Mike Leigh wrote and directed the film, which he made after Happy-Go-Lucky (2008) and before Mr. Turner (2014). Jim Broadbent and Ruth Sheen play Tom and Gerri, with Lesley Manville as Mary, Peter Wight as Ken, Oliver Maltman as Joe and David Bradley as Ronnie. Georgina Lowe produced for Focus Features, Film4, Sony Pictures Classics and the UK Film Council, on a budget of about 8 million USD.
Released in 2010, the film took roughly 18 million USD worldwide against that budget. It holds a 7.4/10 on IMDb from around 32,000 votes and a 7/10 on TMDB from 453 votes, while its critics' rating stands at 8.2/10 from 170 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film is dedicated to the memory of producer Simon Channing-Williams (1945-2009). He and the film's director, Mike Leigh, were friends and collaborators for many years.
- Filming took 12 weeks.
- To show different seasons, cinematographer Dick Pope filmed using various types of film stock. Great attention was paid to the details of the props to show the passage of time.
