Phoenix Forgotten
Short description
Phoenix Forgotten is a found-footage horror and science-fiction film about a group of teenagers who set out to investigate strange lights seen in the sky over Phoenix, Arizona. Three of them vanish without a trace, and twenty years later, footage from the night they disappeared comes to light, revealing what happened during their final hours. The story is framed through the eyes of Sophie, who was a small child when her older brother Josh went missing, and who now tries to understand what became of him.
The film was directed by Justin Barber, who wrote the screenplay with T.S. Nowlin. It was produced by Ridley Scott, Mark Canton and Courtney Solomon, and it stars Florence Hartigan, Luke Spencer Roberts, Chelsea Lopez, Justin Matthews, Clint Jordan and Cyd Strittmatter. It was released in April 2017 and runs 87 minutes.
Made for about 3 million US dollars, it took in roughly 4 million worldwide, a modest return. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.4 from around 7,700 votes, while on TMDB it has a score of 6.3 from 369 votes, and film critics gave it 5.4 from 19 reviews, so the audience and critical responses are similar.
What's left behind the scenes
- The final scenes of the film show a video camera falling out of a spaceship. The filmmakers actually attached a small camera to a weather balloon, and when the balloon burst, the camera fell. To the filmmakers' surprise, only the camera's casing and lens were broken upon impact, while all the internal mechanisms remained intact, and the camera continued to film.
- The plot is based on the story of the "Phoenix Lights"—a series of optical phenomena (commonly referred to as UFOs) observed in the skies over the states of Arizona and Nevada and the Mexican state of Sonora on March 13, 1997.
- Archival footage from CNN was used in the scene of the press conference of Arizona Governor Fife Symington (1991-1995, 1995-1997), in which he ridiculed both the phenomenon itself and its witnesses.
