Ice Cream Man
Short description
Ice Cream Man follows Gregory Tudor, who as a boy witnesses the killing of the neighbourhood ice cream vendor he idolised. The trauma leads to psychiatric treatment, and years later Gregory returns to run his own ice cream business. What his customers do not know is that his frozen treats are being made with increasingly gruesome ingredients, including parts of human bodies. When a local boy disappears, the children of the area begin to suspect Gregory and set out to find out what he is really doing.
The film is a 1995 American horror comedy directed by Norman Apstein and Paul Norman, from a screenplay by David Dobkin and Sven Davison, and produced by Norman and Apstein. Clint Howard plays the title role, with Justin Isfeld, Anndi McAfee, JoJo Adams, Mikey LeBeau and Sandahl Bergman among the cast. It runs 87 minutes and was made for about 2 million dollars. On TMDB it holds a rating of 5.5 out of 10 from 153 votes. The modest figure and the small vote count indicate a low-budget genre title with a limited but settled following rather than a widely seen release.
What's left behind the scenes
- When the police wreck the ice cream parlor, Clint Howard's character walks right through the ice cream, which gets on his shoes and stains his pants. However, when this character is shown outside the shop rather than inside, there is no ice cream on either his shoes or his pants.
- Jan-Michael Vincent, who played Detective Gifford, regularly got drunk during the filming of the movie and performed in that state.
- During the opening credits, the computer game The Journeyman Project, released in 1993, is shown on the screen.
- Some scenes were filmed at the home of director Norman Epstein.
- One of the early drafts of the script envisioned it as a kind of parody of the entire horror movie genre. It took only three days to write the first draft of the script.
- The scenes in the health resort were filmed in an abandoned sanatorium in Pasadena, California. The graffiti on the walls was already there.
- In many scenes, mashed potatoes were used instead of ice cream.
- At the beginning of the film, the words "Protect the Children" are visible on the back doors of the ice cream truck, but Clint Howard's character later replaced them with "Beware, Children." In some subsequent scenes, the original sign is visible on the doors.
- Baseball player Steve Garvey worked on the film for only one day, and spent half of that time signing baseballs for fans.
- JoJo Adams stuffed a pillow under his shirt to look fat.
- Adult film actress Tori Wells (credited as Britannia Paris) played a woman in a supermarket who asked the main character a question about lipstick. This scene was written into the script specifically for her.
- One of the project's sponsors was the footwear company Converse, which is why many characters wear shoes of this brand.
- While preparing for the role of Gregory and developing the voice, actor Clint Howard spent every morning screaming at the top of his lungs in his car on the way to the set.
