Game Night
Short description
Max and Annie are part of a group of couples who meet regularly for a weekly game night. When Max's charismatic brother Brooks takes over the planning, he stages an elaborate murder mystery evening complete with pretend criminals and fake federal agents. The party takes a turn when Brooks appears to be abducted, which the group assumes is simply part of the scenario. As the six competitive players work through the clues, they start to suspect that neither the game nor Brooks is what it seems, and they spend a chaotic night trying to work out what is real.
John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein directed the film, following their earlier comedy Vacation and working from a screenplay they wrote with Mark Perez. Jason Bateman, who also produced, plays Max, with Rachel McAdams as Annie, Kyle Chandler as Brooks, and Sharon Horgan, Billy Magnussen and Lamorne Morris among the players. The production, backed by Warner Bros. Pictures and Davis Entertainment, had a budget of 37 million dollars and took in around 118 million dollars worldwide. Ratings sit at 6.9 out of 10 on IMDb from 276,000 votes and 6.8 out of 10 on TMDB from 6,494 votes; critics gave it 6.9 out of 10 from 256 reviews, placing it in line with how audiences received it.
What's left behind the scenes
- In the scene with Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams in the subway at the beginning of the film, the inscription “Don’t Trust Gary” appears on a screen in the background.
- Before filming began, the actors held their own “game nights” to get to know each other. They played board games.
- Rachel McAdams and Jason Bateman’s characters sarcastically discuss child actors, whom they believe are incapable of anything. Bateman himself became famous for his role in the series “The Hogan Family,” where he began acting at the age of 17.
