Outrage

Several yakuza clans maneuver for the favor of the chairman of a powerful syndicate, using conspiracies, false oaths of loyalty and outright violence as money and territory change hands. Otomo, a veteran gangster, has watched men like himself move from elaborate tattoos and severed fingers into high finance. When Ikemoto, an underboss, is ordered to open an office inside a rival family's territory, the move sets off a chain of retaliation and double-dealing in which the chairman himself pulls strings from the shadows. Otomo is drawn into the escalating conflict, where the struggle to rise or simply survive never stops.

Takeshi Kitano directs and writes, and plays Otomo, with Kippei Shiina, Ryo Kase, Tomokazu Miura, Fumiyo Kohinata and Jun Kunimura heading a credited cast of 41. The film is the twelfth of the sixteen features Kitano has directed in chronological order, following To Each His Own Cinema and preceding Beyond Outrage, which continues the story. Shot in Japan as a French-Japanese co-production, it runs 109 minutes and grossed about 8 million USD worldwide.

Audience response is moderate: on IMDb it holds 6.8/10 from around 16,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.9/10 from roughly 470 votes. The critics' rating of 6.8/10 from 44 reviews sits in line with those viewer scores.
