Peppermint
Short description
Peppermint follows Riley North, a mother whose husband and daughter are killed in a gang attack, leaving her badly wounded and unconscious. When she wakes, she finds that the people responsible have escaped justice through a system that fails her, so she trains for years and returns to hunt down everyone involved, with the police and the FBI pursuing her as well.
The film was directed by Pierre Morel, released in 2018 as the sixth of the eight features he has directed to date, following District B13, Taken, From Paris with Love and The Gunman. Chad St. John wrote the screenplay, and Jennifer Garner plays Riley, heading a cast that includes John Gallagher Jr., John Ortiz, Juan Pablo Raba and Annie Ilonzeh. Made for a budget of 25 million dollars, it took about 54 million dollars worldwide.
Critics rated the film 3.6 out of 10 across 150 reviews, while audiences gave it 6.5 on IMDb from roughly 76,000 votes and 6.7 on TMDB from a smaller pool of about 2,300. The gap suggests viewers responded to it rather more warmly than reviewers did.
What's left behind the scenes
- In the house scene, Jennifer Garner’s character grabs a Maxi-Pad from the medicine cabinet in the bathroom and uses it to cover her wound. They were originally invented for this purpose, as pads absorb blood well, and were later used as a hygiene product.
- In scenes where her character wears a short haircut, Jennifer Garner had to wear a wig.
- Before filming began, Jennifer Garner trained extensively, studying hand-to-hand combat, knife fighting, and the use of small firearms and rifles.
- The film's title reflects the name of an ice cream flavor that Riley's daughter orders right before she is shot.
- Shauna Duggins once again served as Jennifer Garner’s stunt double, and is also a friend. Garner and Duggins have been working together for 19 years.
