Short description
Wonder Woman 1984 is set in 1984 during the Cold War. Diana Prince, living quietly among people and working in archaeology, keeps a low profile while rescuing those in danger and stopping crimes. She meets Barbara Minerva, a shy and awkward colleague, and the two come into contact with an ancient crystal that grants wishes. Its power draws in the businessman and con man Maxwell Lord, and Diana's long-dead love Steve Trevor returns. Barbara gains confidence and superhuman strength, while Diana must face both her and Lord as the crystal's effects spread.
Patty Jenkins directed and co-wrote the film with Dave Callaham and Geoff Johns, following Monster and her 2017 Wonder Woman. Gal Gadot returns as Diana Prince, with Chris Pine as Steve Trevor, Kristen Wiig as Barbara Minerva, Pedro Pascal as Maxwell Lord, and Robin Wright and Connie Nielsen as Antiope and Hippolyta. Charles Roven, Jenkins and Zack Snyder produced the film for Atlas Entertainment, Warner Bros. Pictures, DC Films and The Stone Quarry, with a budget of 200 million USD.
The film was released in December 2020 and earned 170 million USD worldwide, less than its budget. On IMDb it holds 5.3/10 from 310,000 votes and on TMDB 6.3/10 from 9,262 votes. A film critics' rating of 6/10 from 456 reviews places critical response slightly above the audience score on IMDb but below the TMDB figure.
What's left behind the scenes
- To film the jewelry store robbery scene, they rented a vacant shopping mall in Alexandria, Virginia (USA). Built in 1965 and closed in 2017, it required the production designer and her team to completely change the design – from lighting fixtures to hallway signage.
- Southern Spain proved to be very diverse, ‘playing’ Egypt thanks to Moorish architecture and the magnificent Alcazaba in Almería. On the Canary Islands, Tenerife, the contests between Diana and the Amazons were held. They were mainly filmed in Valle Olvido (better known as the Valley of Death).
- The part of the Amazon Games that took place in the stadium, where hundreds of Amazons cheered on the athletes, was filmed in Fuerteventura.
- After completing filming in America, the actors and crew traveled to England – to location shoots and to the Warner Bros. Leavesden studio for work in a soundstage. There, the interiors of the Oval Office of the White House and the Smithsonian Museum were recreated. The group then moved to Spain, including the Canary Islands off the coast of Morocco. Scenes taking place in Cairo and in the palace of Emir Said ibn Abidos, as well as the grand Amazonian Games, were filmed there.
- The film was shot in several cities in the USA, at a studio in the UK, in southern Spain, and on the Canary Islands.
- Emma Stone was initially offered the role of the antagonist, but the actress declined. Only then was the offer made to Kristen Wiig, which director Patty Jenkins had originally insisted upon.
