Short description
Tolkien is a biographical drama about the early life of J.R.R. Tolkien, the author and philologist who created the world of Middle-earth. Raised in England in the early twentieth century after being orphaned, the young Tolkien finds companionship with three schoolmates who share his love of literature and art. Their friendship, along with his courtship of Edith Bratt, shapes his formative years. The outbreak of the First World War threatens to tear the group apart.
Dome Karukoski directs from a screenplay by David Gleeson and Stephen Beresford. It is the third of five films Karukoski has directed, following Heart of a Lion and Tom of Finland and preceding Little Siberia and Hippo Love. Nicholas Hoult plays the adult Tolkien, with Lily Collins as Edith Bratt, Harry Gilby and Mimi Keene as their younger counterparts, and Colm Meaney and Derek Jacobi in supporting roles. The production involved 45 credited cast members and 110 credited crew.
Made for a budget of 20 million US dollars, the film earned about 9 million worldwide, a return well below its cost. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.8 from roughly 51,000 votes. On TMDB its rating is 6.9 from more than 1,500 votes, while the critics' score stands lower at 5.8 from 197 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- Many nuances of Tolkien's apprenticeship are fictionalized, but, as shown in the film, the four friends did indeed found a circle called “T.C.B.S.” – a fellowship of aspiring poets and artists who met to discuss issues of art and literature.
- Even before the film's release, the Tolkien family and the “Tolkien Estate” (the legal entity that manages the estate of writer J.R.R. Tolkien, including the copyrights to his works) stated that the film did not receive their approval, they did not give permission for its creation, and they have no involvement in the creation or content of the film.
