Mr. Nice

Mr. Nice is a British-Spanish crime comedy-drama based on the autobiography of Howard Marks, a Welshman who became one of the world's most notorious cannabis smugglers. The story follows Marks from his small hometown in south Wales to Oxford University, where he drifts into drug trafficking and discovers a talent for it. Building on friendships in intelligence circles and contacts with an IRA figure, he develops a cannabis transport network stretching from Pakistan to London and soon heads the largest marijuana operation in Europe, adopting dozens of aliases and front companies to stay ahead of the authorities. A US drug enforcement agent named Craig Lovato becomes determined to catch him.

Bernard Rose directed and wrote the screenplay, the ninth of the fourteen films he has directed, following Snuff-Movie and preceding 2 Jacks. Rhys Ifans plays Marks, with Chloë Sevigny as his wife Judy, David Thewlis as Jim McCann, Luis Tosar as Lovato and Crispin Glover as Ernie Combs among a credited cast of sixty-six. The film runs 121 minutes.

Numbers suggest a mixed reception. On IMDb-derived critics' data the film holds 5.5/10 from forty-seven reviews, while on TMDB it has 6.1/10 from 169 votes, so audiences rate it slightly higher than reviewers did, though both sit in modest territory.
