Luo Hongwu returns to Kaili, the town he left behind years earlier, to bury his father. His homecoming stirs memories of a woman he loved and could not forget, and he sets out to find her, recalling the summer they once shared. His search draws him through a landscape in which past and present, waking life and dream, blend together, and what he learns about the woman and about an old crime refuses to stay neatly in the past.
Bi Gan wrote and directed this drama and mystery, his second feature after Kaili Blues in 2016 and the film that followed it in his career. Tang Wei plays Wan Qiwen, with Huang Jue as Luo Hongwu, alongside Sylvia Chang, Lee Hong Chi, Chen Yongzhong and Zeng Meihuizi. Produced by Huang Xiaoming, Han Han and Shen Yang, it was made for about 13 million dollars and took roughly 42 million dollars worldwide.
On IMDb it holds 7.1 out of 10 from around 11,000 votes, and on TMDB 7 out of 10 from fewer than 300 votes. A film critics' rating of 7.9 out of 10 from 91 reviews places professional assessments somewhat higher than the audience scores, which are close to each other and indicate a generally positive if not unanimous response.
