Short description
George and Linda are a married couple living in a small Manhattan apartment. When George loses his job, their finances force them to leave New York and head for Atlanta to stay with his brother, whose behaviour soon drives them away. On the road they come across Elysium, a rural community whose residents reject money and material possessions, and the couple decide to give that way of life a try. The clash between their urban habits and the commune's freewheeling ways tests their relationship.
David Wain directed and co-wrote the film with Ken Marino; it was the fourth of the seven features Wain has directed, arriving between Role Models and They Came Together, and it was produced by Judd Apatow, Wain and star Paul Rudd. Rudd plays George opposite Jennifer Aniston as Linda, with Malin Åkerman, Justin Theroux, Alan Alda and Marino in supporting roles, part of a cast of 53 and a crew of 43.
Released in February 2012, the comedy romance runs 98 minutes and was made for 35 million USD, taking about 24 million USD worldwide. On IMDb and TMDB it sits at 5.5 from roughly 1,400 votes, while a critics' score of 5.6 from 144 reviews places it close to the audience response.
What's left behind the scenes
- The role of the nudist Wayne Davidson was originally intended for Fred Armisen, who dropped out of the project due to a scheduling conflict.
- During six weeks of filming in the vicinity of Clarksville, the film crew was almost completely cut off from the outside world. This kind of isolation allowed the actors to communicate more with each other and build understanding. For the filming, the producers hired a group of residents from a nearby nudist colony as extras and stand-ins.
- Jessica Alba was considered for the role of Eve.
