Short description

Set in a small New England town, Lady and the Tramp follows a pampered Cocker Spaniel whose comfortable life is upended when a baby arrives in her owners' household. Thrown onto the streets, she meets a streetwise stray who knows the city's rougher corners and shows her a life without a collar. The two dogs form a bond as she navigates a world far removed from her sheltered home.

This 2019 live-action remake of Disney's animated classic was directed by Charlie Bean, his second feature after The Lego Ninjago Movie (2017). The screenplay is by Andrew Bujalski and Kari Granlund, and the voice cast includes Tessa Thompson as Lady and Justin Theroux as Tramp, with Kiersey Clemons, Thomas Mann, Ashley Jensen and Benedict Wong in supporting roles. The production brought together 70 credited cast members and 48 credited crew members across Walt Disney Pictures and Taylor Made Entertainment.

Made for a budget of 60 million dollars, the film earned about 51 million dollars worldwide, less than its cost. Audiences are divided on it: on IMDb it holds 6.2 out of 10 from nearly 24,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 7.2 out of 10 from a much smaller group of around 1,700 voters. A film critics' rating of 5.9 out of 10 from 72 reviews places it close to the IMDb audience figure.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Jock is the second animal from Disney's works to have their gender changed from male to female during the filming of a live-action remake of a classic animation. The first was the snake Kaa from "The Jungle Book" (1967).
  • The film is set in New Orleans in the 1920s. Interracial marriages were prohibited in the state of Louisiana until 1967.
  • Storyboard artist Chris Reccardi (1964-2019) passed away from a heart attack even before the film's release. This happened on May 2, 2019. The film is dedicated to his memory.
