Royal Tramp 2 continues the story begun in its predecessor. The Empress has been exposed as Lung Erh, a member of the Saint Dragon Sect who seized the throne and locked away the real empress. She now wants to silence Wai Siu Bo, the man who revealed her secret, but her plans grow tangled when she is ordered to guard the Prince, whose servant turns out to be Wai Siu Bo himself. The film mixes martial arts action with comedy as the court intrigue plays out.
Wong Jing directed and wrote the screenplay, with Jimmy Heung Wah-Sing, Stephen Shiu Yeuk-Yuen and Charles Heung producing for Orange Sky Golden Harvest and Win's Movie Productions. Released in Hong Kong on 24 September 1992 and running 93 minutes, it was the seventh of the 37 films Wong has directed in chronological order, arriving between Tricky Brains and the first Royal Tramp. Stephen Chow leads as Wai Siu Bo, joined by Brigitte Lin, Chingmy Yau, Natalis Chan Pak-Cheung, Michelle Reis and Fennie Yuen Kit-Ying among a credited cast of 21.
The ratings reflect a warmly received sequel rather than a divisive one. It holds 7 out of 10 on IMDb from around 3,300 votes and 7.1 out of 10 on TMDB from roughly 107 votes, modest samples that nonetheless sit at the positive end of the scale and remain closely aligned across the two audiences.
