Short description
Set in the year 2067, the film depicts a world ravaged by climate change, where plant life has largely vanished and breathable air is scarce. Humanity depends on synthetic oxygen, but that substitute is causing a fatal illness that spreads across the population. A message arrives from the future, naming tunnel worker Ethan Whyte as the one who must be sent forward in time. The company controlling the oxygen supply has built a quantum machine to probe what lies ahead, and Ethan is chosen to travel into it, leaving behind his ailing wife Xanthe. What he finds forces him to confront his own fears while searching for a way to secure humanity's survival.
Seth Larney directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Gareth Davies, working with producers Kate Croser, Jason Taylor and Lisa Shaunessy. Kodi Smit-McPhee plays Ethan, with Ryan Kwanten as Jude Mathers, Sana'a Shaik as Xanthe, Aaron Glenane and Leeanna Walsman as Ethan's parents, and Deborah Mailman as Regina Jackson. The Australian-American production runs 114 minutes and blends science fiction with thriller elements.
Audience response has been modest: on IMDb it holds a rating of 4.9 from roughly 13,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.5 from about 978 votes. A critics' rating of 4.9 from 31 reviews places it essentially level with the IMDb figure, suggesting neither critics nor viewers responded strongly.
What's left behind the scenes
- An automated announcement states that the oxygen level is 3.3% (whereas a normal level is considered to be 21%). A few minutes later, one of the characters sacrifices themselves, however, open flames cannot exist at an oxygen level of 3.3%. This same irrefutable fact applies to the burning forests and buildings shown on screen.
- The film is set in Australia, and all the characters speak with Australian accents. Ironically, only Jude, played by Australian actor Ryan Kwanten, speaks with a distinct American pronunciation. No explanation for this has ever been found.
- At the end of the credits, there's a disclaimer stating that "no butterflies were harmed during the making of the film." This is a reference to the butterfly glimpsed in the finale, and likely also to the "butterfly effect" (a term in the natural sciences that denotes the property of some chaotic systems, according to which even a small impact on the system can have unpredictable and large consequences in some other place and at some other time). The film also mentions several other theories related to time.
