Project Gutenberg, released in 2018, centres on a Hong Kong police investigation into a counterfeiting ring. The gang produces fake banknotes of a quality that makes them almost indistinguishable from real currency, and its operations reach well beyond the city. The man behind it all is known only by the code name Painter. To identify him, the authorities turn to Lee Man, a forger with artistic ambitions who once worked alongside the gang and now has reason to cooperate with the police. His cooperation puts him under pressure from the people he is helping to expose.
The film was directed and written by Felix Chong Man-keung. It followed Overheard 2 (2011) in his filmography as a director and preceded The Goldfinger (2023). Chow Yun-fat plays Painter, Aaron Kwok plays Lee Man and Zhang Jingchu plays Yuen Man, with Joyce Feng, Liu Kai-Chi and Catherine Chau in supporting roles. It was produced by Ronald Wong Ban, Costa Vassos and Ellen Cheung Man-Wing, and made on a budget of 38 million USD.
Audience reactions were moderately positive: on IMDb it holds 6.8 out of 10 from around 5,600 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7.1 out of 10 from 144 votes. A smaller set of critics' scores averages 5.7 out of 10 from six reviews.
