Everything Everywhere All at Once centers on Evelyn Wang, a Chinese immigrant in the United States who runs a laundromat and is struggling on several fronts at once. A tax audit, her demanding father, her distracted husband and her strained relationship with her daughter all come to a head during a visit to a tax office, where she learns she can move between parallel universes and draw on the memories, skills and lives of other versions of herself. Only Evelyn can oppose a mysterious destructive force threatening not just her own world but the wider multiverse, while her family remains what she most wants to hold on to.
The film was written and directed by Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan, following their earlier features Swiss Army Man and The Death of Dick Long, and it sits fourth in Scheinert's directing filmography. Michelle Yeoh leads the cast as Evelyn, with Stephanie Hsu, Ke Huy Quan, James Hong, Jamie Lee Curtis and Tallie Medel among the main players. It was produced by A24, TPC, IAC Films and AGBO, with Anthony and Joe Russo and Tim Headington credited as producers.
Made for a modest budget by science-fiction standards, the film became a substantial commercial success, earning far more worldwide than it cost. On IMDb it holds 7.8 out of 10 across nearly half a million votes, and on TMDB 7.7 from over eight thousand votes, while the critics' rating stands at 8.5 from more than four hundred reviews, noticeably above the audience scores.
