Set during the Chinese Cultural Revolution, this historical drama follows a man who escapes from a labor camp. His goal is to see a specific piece of film footage, but a homeless orphan steals the reel he is searching for. As they both struggle to possess the film, the two strangers develop an unexpected relationship while traveling toward a town where local residents are eager for a movie screening.
The film was directed by Zhang Yimou, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Zou Jingzhi. In the chronological order of his work, this is film number 19 of 25, following Shadow and preceding Cliff Walkers. The production was a collaboration between Edko Films and Huanxi Media Group, featuring a cast led by Zhang Yi, Liu Haocun, and Fan Wei.
