Pride and Prejudice and Zombies
Short description
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is set in an alternate Regency England where a zombie plague has overrun the country. Elizabeth Bennet and her four sisters have been trained in martial arts and weaponry to defend themselves and their family, while the wealthy Mr. Darcy is a formidable zombie hunter shaped by the rigid class prejudices of his station. As the outbreak worsens, Elizabeth and Darcy must put aside their pride and mutual suspicion and fight side by side against the undead. The film adapts Seth Grahame-Smith's novel, which mashes Jane Austen's classic romance together with horror.
Burr Steers directed and wrote the screenplay, his fourth feature after Igby Goes Down, 17 Again and Charlie St. Cloud. Lily James leads as Elizabeth, with Sam Riley as Darcy, Jack Huston as George Wickham, Bella Heathcote as Jane, Douglas Booth as Charles Bingley and Matt Smith as Parson Collins. Natalie Portman is among the producers.
Released in February 2016, the film had a budget of 28 million USD and took about 16 million USD worldwide, a result well short of its cost. On IMDb it holds 5.8/10 from roughly 59,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.2/10 from over 2,300 votes. A critics' rating of 5.4/10 from 195 reviews places professional assessment slightly below the audience scores on both sites.
What's left behind the scenes
- Initially, David O. Russell was slated to direct the film, but he was unable to participate in the project due to a busy schedule.
- Jack Huston and Sam Riley portrayed writer Jack Kerouac in different films: Huston starred in 'Kill Your Darlings', while Riley appeared in 'On the Road', where he played the fictional writer Sal Paradise, whose character was based on Kerouac.
- Bella Heathcote and Lily James, who played the older Bennett sisters, auditioned for the lead role in "Cinderella" (2015). The filmmakers chose Lily James.
- Matt Smith and Lena Headey both appeared in the "Terminator" franchise. Headey played Sarah Connor in the series "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" (2008), while Smith played Alex in the film "Terminator Genisys" (2015).
- Natalie Portman was initially considered for the role of Elizabeth Bennet, but the actress was unable to film due to commitments to other projects. Before the role was given to Lily James, the filmmakers considered Scarlett Johansson, Anne Hathaway, Emma Stone, Mia Wasikowska, Rooney Mara, Mila Kunis, and Blake Lively. Natalie Portman remained on the project as a producer.
- When David O. Russell left the project, Mike Newell, David Slade, Matt Reeves, Jonathan Demme, Neil Marshall, Mike White, Phil Lord, and Christopher Miller were considered as potential directors. Burr Steers ultimately became the director.
- Lena Headey and Charles Dance played members of House Lannister in the series "Game of Thrones" (2011).
