What's left behind the scenes

  • The first film in Joel Coen's filmography that he directed without his brother's involvement.
  • The film was shot on a soundstage among specially constructed sets. Thus, the entire film was shot indoors, with the exception of a very short segment at the very end.
  • The entire film is shot in shades of gray, and color saturation changes depending on the specific scene.
  • According to cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel, almost all the costumes and sets were white – with the exception of some of Frances McDormand's dresses. Delbonnel even ordered shadows to be painted onto the sets to make everything look even more otherworldly.
  • Filming took 36 days – a record-short time for director and screenwriter Joel Coen.
