The Tragedy of Macbeth

A Scottish lord, Macbeth, learns from three witches that he is destined to become king. Encouraged by his wife, and driven by his own ambition, he kills the reigning monarch and seizes the throne, a choice that sets him on a course of betrayal and violence with consequences he cannot control.

Joel Coen directed and wrote the screenplay, working without his brother Ethan for the first time in his career as a solo director. The film is his twenty-first directing credit, following The Ballad of Buster Scruggs in 2018. Denzel Washington plays Macbeth and Frances McDormand plays Lady Macbeth; Coen and McDormand produced alongside Robert Graf. The supporting cast includes Alex Hassell as Ross, Bertie Carvel as Banquo, Brendan Gleeson as Duncan and Corey Hawkins as Macduff, with thirty-six credited cast members and seventy-two credited crew. The production was handled by A24 and IAC Films, and it runs 105 minutes.
