Thirty young people are raised in isolation from birth, bred for intelligence and obedience to crew a long multi-generational mission: a voyage to a distant, habitable planet that their grandchildren, not they, will reach. The only adult aboard is the captain who supervises them. When he dies in unexplained circumstances, the young crew is left to govern itself, and the discipline they were trained into begins to break down.
Two of them, Zac and Christopher, discover that the daily supplement the whole group has been taking contains a substance that keeps them calm and compliant. As the crew stops taking it and control weakens, the group's behaviour turns on itself, and the greatest danger on the ship becomes the passengers.
Neil Burger wrote and directed the film, following The Illusionist, Limitless, Divergent and The Upside in his filmography, and produced it with Basil Iwanyk and Brendon Boyea. Tye Sheridan and Fionn Whitehead play Christopher and Zac, with Lily-Rose Depp as Sela, Colin Farrell as the captain Richard, and Chanté Adams and Viveik Kalra among the credited cast of forty.
The film cost about 20 million USD and returned roughly 4 million USD worldwide. On IMDb it holds 5.4/10 from over 25,000 votes and on TMDB 6/10 from about a thousand votes; a critics' rating of 4.9/10 across 144 reviews places it close to, though slightly below, those audience scores.
