Chickie Donohue, a New York bartender, watches friends from his old neighbourhood head off to fight in Vietnam. Wanting to lift their spirits, he comes up with a reckless plan: travel to Vietnam himself and bring them American beer. The trip begins as a light-hearted gesture, but once he reaches the country and sees the war up close, his understanding of the conflict and of what his friends are enduring shifts.
Peter Farrelly directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Pete Jones and Brian Hayes Currie. The film is the fifteenth of the eighteen features Farrelly has directed in chronological order, arriving after Green Book and before Ricky Stanicky. Zac Efron plays Chickie, with Russell Crowe as Arthur Coates, Bill Murray as a colonel, and Kyle Allen, Jake Picking, Will Ropp and others among the large credited cast. It was produced by Dana Goldberg, Jake Myers and Don Granger for Skydance.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 6.8 from around 37,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 7.5 from under a thousand votes; the critics' score is lower, 5.2 from 124 reviews. Its roughly 3 million dollar budget is modest for a war-themed production with this cast.
