P.S. I Love You

Holly Kennedy is a young woman whose life has been built around her love for her husband, Gerry. After Gerry dies of an illness, Holly withdraws into grief, and her future seems to have closed off. Then messages begin arriving, written by Gerry before his death and left behind so that she would keep receiving them after he was gone. Each one gives her something to do or somewhere to go, and each ends with the same postscript: "P.S. I Love You." The letters draw her slowly back into the world and toward a life she has to rebuild without him.

Richard LaGravenese directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Steven Rogers, based on Cecelia Ahern's novel. It was his third time in the director's chair, following Paris Je T'aime and Freedom Writers the previous year; four more features would follow, from Beautiful Creatures to A Family Affair. Hilary Swank plays Holly, Gerard Butler plays Gerry, and the supporting cast includes Lisa Kudrow, Harry Connick Jr., Gina Gershon and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, among 23 credited performers.

Made for about 30 million dollars, the film took roughly 157 million worldwide, a strong return on its budget. On IMDb it holds 7 out of 10 from about 225,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.2 out of 10 from several thousand. Its critics' rating of 4.5 out of 10 from 103 reviews is markedly lower than those audience scores, a contrast typical of sentimental romances that find their public regardless.
