Back to the Past

Set during the Qin Dynasty, this science fiction action comedy follows Hong Siu-lung, a time traveler who has spent twenty years in hiding with his family. Despite his seclusion, he is monitored by the Qin Emperor, his former student. After the emperor conquers six warring states, a group attacking him uses advanced technology from Hong's original era. This event forces the two men to reconcile a long-standing personal conflict to protect the future. The story serves as a sequel to the 2001 series A Step Into the Past, taking place two decades after those events.

The film was co-directed by Ng Yuen-fai and Jack Lai Jan-Lung. For Ng Yuen-fai, this followed Warriors of Future (2022), while for Jack Lai Jan-Lung, it followed Possession Street (2024). Both directors later worked together on Back To The Past Plus+ (2026). The cast features Louis Koo, Raymond Lam Fung, Bai Baihe, Jessica Hsuan Huen, Sonija Kwok Sin-Nae, and Joyce Tang Lai-Ming.

Produced by One Cool Film Production, Huace Pictures, China Star Movie Limited, and Big Honor Entertainment, the movie had a budget of 45 million USD and earned 39 million USD at the worldwide box office. On TMDB, it holds a rating of 6/10 based on 29 votes.
