Red Faction: Origins

In the years after Alec Mason led the Martian Colonies to freedom, his family was shattered when enemies killed his wife and abducted his daughter Lyra. Now Jake Mason, Alec's surviving son, serves as an officer in the Red Faction militia. When he learns that Lyra is still alive, he sets out to find her, only to discover that she has grown up as a soldier on the opposing side and intends to destroy the faction he serves. At the same time, a new and dangerous group led by Adam Hale threatens what his father fought for. The story sits between the events of the Red Faction games Guerrilla and Armageddon.

The film is a 2011 television science fiction production shot in Bulgaria with American involvement, directed by Michael Nankin. It comes late in a directing career that had begun with Midnight Madness in 1980, and it was written by Danny Bilson and Andrew Kreisberg. Brian J. Smith plays Jake, with Tamzin Merchant as Lyra, Robert Patrick as Alec, Kate Vernon, Danielle Nicolet and Devon Graye in supporting roles.

On IMDb the film holds a rating of 5.1 from roughly 3,900 votes, and on TMDB it stands at 5.2 from a much smaller base of 84 votes. Both figures point to a modest reception rather than a widely praised one.
