Black Tea

Aya, a woman from Côte d'Ivoire in her early thirties, shocks her community by refusing to marry on her wedding day. Seeking a new beginning, she moves to Guangzhou, China, where she finds employment in a tea export shop. There, she meets Cai, a 45-year-old man and expert in the art of the tea ceremony. As the two develop a romantic relationship, they must face challenges stemming from their personal histories and the prejudices of the people around them.

The film was directed by Abderrahmane Sissako, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Kessen Tall. This production follows Sissako's 2014 film Timbuktu. The main cast features Nina Mélo as Aya and Han Chang as Cai, with supporting roles played by Wu Ke-Xi, Michael Chang, Pei-Jen Yu, and Wei Huang. A collaboration between companies from Luxembourg, Mauritania, Taiwan, France, and Côte d'Ivoire, the drama has a runtime of 111 minutes.

Audience reception has been mixed. On IMDb, the movie holds a rating of 5.2/10 based on 763 votes, while on TMDB it has a slightly higher score of 6/10 from 54 votes.
