Snowtown is an Australian crime drama set in a deprived suburb of Adelaide, where sixteen-year-old Jamie lives with his mother and brothers amid unemployment and violence. When his mother takes up with John Bunting, a charismatic older man, Jamie comes to see him as the father figure he never had. Bunting draws the teenager into his circle of self-appointed neighbourhood watchmen, and Jamie gradually realises that the man he admires is responsible for a series of killings. The film is based on real events, the murders committed in South Australia during the 1990s that became known as the bodies-in-the-barrels case.
The film marked the feature directing debut of Justin Kurzel and was written by Shaun Grant. Kurzel went on to direct The Turning, Macbeth, Assassin's Creed, True History of the Kelly Gang, Nitram, The Order and Ellis Park. Daniel Henshall plays John Bunting, with Lucas Pittaway as Jamie, Louise Harris as Elizabeth Harvey, and Frank Cwertniak, Matthew Howard and Marcus Howard in supporting roles.
Snowtown was released in 2011 and runs 120 minutes. It was made for about 2 million US dollars and took roughly 1 million dollars worldwide, meaning it did not recoup its production budget at the box office. On TMDB it holds a rating of 6.3 out of 10 from 371 votes.
