Set in Kobe in 1940, as Japan's population is divided over the country's entry into the Second World War, the film follows Satoko Fukuhara, wife of a fabric merchant. Her husband Yūsaku runs a trading company, and when he travels to Manchuria without her, he returns changed. Satoko grows suspicious and begins to wonder what he is hiding, while a childhood friend now serving in the military police, Yasuharu Tsumori, brings her disturbing news. What Yūsaku encountered abroad pushes him toward an act that places the couple in danger, and Satoko must decide how far she will stand by him.
Kiyoshi Kurosawa directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Ryusuke Hamaguchi and Tadashi Nohara. The film is the tenth of fifteen he has directed in chronological order, following To the Ends of the Earth and preceding Actually... Yu Aoi plays Satoko and Issey Takahashi plays Yūsaku, with Masahiro Higashide, Ryota Bando, Yuri Tsunematsu and Hyunri in supporting roles. It was produced by Nikkatsu Corporation, Kodansha, AMUSE and The Asahi Shimbun, and runs 114 minutes.
On IMDb the film holds 6.6 out of 10 from around 3,500 votes, and on TMDB 6.7 out of 10 from roughly a hundred votes. A critics' rating of 7.1 out of 10 from 56 reviews places it somewhat above those audience scores.
