Meet the Fockers
Short description
Meet the Fockers continues the story of nurse Greg Focker, who has finally won the approval of his intimidating former CIA agent father-in-law, Jack Byrnes, and can now plan his wedding to Jack's daughter Pam. The remaining obstacle is an introduction between the two families, so the Byrnes travel to Florida to spend a weekend with Greg's parents, Bernie and Roz Focker. Bernie is a retired lawyer, Roz is a sex therapist, and their relaxed, uninhibited household clashes sharply with Jack's controlling, suspicious nature, setting up a meeting in which the future in-laws are the ones being scrutinized and found wanting. The film is the second entry in the series that began with Meet the Parents.
Jay Roach directed this sixth of his fourteen films to date, following Austin Powers in Goldmember and preceding Recount. Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro return as Greg and Jack, with Blythe Danner and Teri Polo reprising their roles as Dina and Pam, while Dustin Hoffman and Barbra Streisand join as Greg's parents. De Niro also produced. Made for around 80 million dollars, the comedy earned roughly 517 million worldwide, a strong return that shows the sequel reached well beyond the original's audience.
On IMDb it holds 6.4/10 from about 301,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.3/10 from over 5,000 votes; a critics' score of 5.5/10 from 163 reviews sits just below those viewer figures.
What's left behind the scenes
- The flight attendant who takes Greg's suitcase to the overhead compartment at the beginning of the film is the same one who got him removed from the plane at the end of "Meet the Parents".
- The bottle Mini-Jack is stuck to is Mount Gay rum, one of the oldest rum brands currently in existence.
- The horn of Burns' RV plays the melody "Puff the Magic Dragon", which Greg and Jack discussed in "Meet the Parents".
- Alanna Ubach, who plays Isabella, Greg's nanny, is actually ten years younger than Ben Stiller.
- The filmmakers had to prove to the FCC that a person with the last name Focker (English: Focker) actually exists before the film was allowed to be released.
- In the scene where Greg and his father speed after Jack, the license plate of Bernard's car reads "TMI". This is a subtle reference to Bernard's character's tendency to overshare and provide excessive personal details. TMI is a literary abbreviation for "too much information".
- Teri Polo (Pam) accidentally called Barbra Streisand "Boob" (a slang term for a woman's breasts), and this nickname stuck with the actress on set.
- Filming took place from March 29 to June 2004.
