Batman: Year One is an animated adaptation of the comic by Frank Miller, following Bruce Wayne's earliest attempts to fight crime in Gotham City and Jim Gordon's arrival as a police officer there. Bruce returns home after years of training abroad, begins wearing a bat costume on his first outings, and learns through mistakes, while Gordon finds corruption inside his own department and a city in the grip of organized crime under Carmine Falcone. The two men's paths cross as they discover they are working toward similar ends, and Selina Kyle begins the personal change that will lead her toward a different life. The story also includes Gordon's relationship with his fellow officer Sarah Essen.
The film was released in 2011, runs 64 minutes, and was directed by Lauren Montgomery and Sam Liu, from a screenplay by Tab Murphy, with Montgomery also producing. It is the sixth of 22 films Liu has directed, between Planet Hulk and All Star Superman, and it follows several earlier DC animated features in Montgomery's filmography. The voice cast includes Ben McKenzie as Bruce Wayne, Bryan Cranston as Jim Gordon, Eliza Dushku as Selina, Katee Sackhoff as Detective Essen, Jon Polito as Commissioner Loeb and Alex Rocco as Falcone, among 24 credited performers. Made for about 4 million dollars, it holds a rating of 7.3 on IMDb from around 41,000 votes and 7.3 on TMDB from roughly a thousand votes, while critics' reviews average 6.8.
