Set in Oklahoma in 1987, Dirty Girl follows Danielle, a high school student with a reputation that has landed her in trouble with school authorities. Paired with Clarke, a shy and withdrawn classmate, through a work project, she gets to know him better and the two form an unlikely bond. Both are drawn to good-looking boys, since Clarke is gay. When circumstances at home push them to leave, the pair set off for California: Danielle hopes to track down the father she has never met, while Clarke wants to escape parents who are threatening to send him to military school. Their mothers, Sue-Ann and Peggy, set out after them.
The film was directed by Abe Sylvia, who also wrote the screenplay, and it was released in 2010 with a runtime of 90 minutes. Juno Temple plays Danielle, Jeremy Dozier plays Clarke, and Milla Jovovich and Mary Steenburgen appear as their mothers, with Dwight Yoakam and William H. Macy in supporting roles. Produced by Rachel Cohen, Jana Edelbaum and Charles Pugliese, it is a modestly scaled American independent production with a budget of 4 million dollars.
On IMDb the film holds a critics' rating of 5 out of 10 from 40 reviews, while on TMDB it has a rating of 6 out of 10 from 214 votes, indicating a somewhat warmer response from general viewers than from critics.
