Short description

Sean Anderson, a teenager with a taste for adventure, picks up a coded distress signal that appears to come from a remote island absent from any map. Convinced it was sent by his missing grandfather, he sets out to find the place, joined by Hank, his mother's boyfriend, who hopes the trip will bring the two of them closer. Their search takes them across the Pacific with a helicopter pilot, Gabato, and his daughter Kailani, and eventually strands them on an island unlike anything they expected, where strange creatures, lost treasure and old secrets await. Saving the island's lone human inhabitant and getting home again become the priority.

Brad Peyton directed the film, his second feature after Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore, and the follow-up to Journey to the Center of the Earth. Brian and Mark Gunn wrote the screenplay, with Beau Flynn, Tripp Vinson and Charlotte Huggins producing for Warner Bros. Pictures, New Line Cinema, Walden Media and Contrafilm. Dwayne Johnson plays Hank, Josh Hutcherson returns as Sean, and Vanessa Hudgens, Luis Guzmán, Michael Caine and Kristin Davis round out the cast.

Made for about 79 million USD, the film took roughly 356 million USD worldwide, a strong return on its budget. On TMDB it holds 6.2/10 from over 4,600 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 5/10 from 130 reviews, so audiences have been somewhat warmer toward it than reviewers.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Filming took place on Oahu Island and in Wilmington.
  • Dwayne Johnson himself grew up in a musical family, so the idea of singing in the film and playing the ukulele came from him. He suggested this idea to director Brad Peyton, and he liked it.
  • The film is based on Jules Verne's novel 'The Mysterious Island' (French: L'Île mystérieuse, 1874).
