Short description

Set in 1925 on the island of Mauritius, this romantic drama follows Lucy Gladwell, a seventeen-year-old orphan sent from England to live with her uncle. While Lucy is initially struck by the beauty of her surroundings, she soon clashes with her uncle, whose cruel nature contradicts his friendly facade. The conflict intensifies when Lucy rejects her uncle's attempts to arrange a marriage for financial profit and instead falls in love with Krishna, a worker at a nearby plantation. Together, they must face those who seek to separate them.

The film was directed by Mitch Jenkins, following his previous work A Million Days. It was written by Jason Wingard, Alan Govinden, and Jenkins, and was inspired by the book Prisoner of Paradise and the lives of Maria and Alan Govinden. The cast features Ellie Bamber in the lead role as Lucy, with Rupert Penry-Jones, Mehdi Dehbi, and Rhona Mitra in supporting roles. On TMDB, the movie has a rating of 7/10 based on one vote.
