Jay is a former British soldier living with his wife Shel and their young son. Money is short, the marriage is strained, and eight months have passed since a job in Kyiv went badly wrong and left him scarred both physically and mentally. At a dinner with his friend Gal, Jay is offered a way out: a well-paid assignment involving three targets. He accepts, and what looks like straightforward work pulls him steadily into fear and paranoia.
Ben Wheatley directed and co-wrote the film with Amy Jump, following his debut Down Terrace in 2010. Neil Maskell plays Jay, with MyAnna Buring as Shel, Michael Smiley as Gal and Struan Rodger as the client. Andrew Starke and Claire Jones produced the British production, made with Film4 and the UK Film Council among others.
Released in 2011, the film runs 95 minutes and mixes crime and thriller elements with horror. Critics rated it considerably higher than general viewers, with a critics' score of 7.3/10 from 96 reviews against a TMDB rating of 6.2/10 from 915 votes, suggesting it was appreciated more by reviewers than by the wider audience. It stands second in Wheatley's filmography, between Down Terrace and Sightseers.
