Rampart

Rampart centres on Dave Brown, a veteran Los Angeles police officer who works in a unit handling the department's dirtiest business and who operates by his own brutal code of justice. After a video camera catches him beating a suspect, the footage spreads across television, and his refusal to disown his conduct turns him into a liability for a police force already under scrutiny. Set in 1999, the story draws on the real Rampart scandal, in which dozens of officers from a special Los Angeles Police Department division faced internal investigation over corruption and abuse of authority. Brown's professional crisis unfolds alongside his tangled private life, including two ex-wives who are sisters, two daughters, and a mentor whose advice leads him further astray.

Oren Moverman directed the film, his second feature following The Messenger, from a screenplay he wrote with crime novelist James Ellroy. Woody Harrelson plays Brown, with Robin Wright, Sigourney Weaver, Ned Beatty, Ben Foster and Ice Cube in supporting roles; twenty-three cast members and 137 crew are credited.

Released in 2011, the film runs 108 minutes and was made for about 12 million dollars, against a worldwide box office of roughly 2 million. On IMDb it holds 5.8/10 from around 26,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.5/10 from 419 votes. A critics' rating of 6.6/10 from 145 reviews places it somewhat above the audience scores. Moverman went on to direct Time Out of Mind and The Dinner.
