Short description

1911 is a historical war drama set during the final years of the Qing dynasty, when unrest spread across China and revolutionary forces moved against the imperial government. The story follows the military commander Huang Xing and the revolutionary leader Sun Yat-sen as they help lead the Wuchang Uprising in October 1911, the revolt that grew into the larger Xinhai Revolution and opened the way for a republic. The revolutionaries face the empress dowager Longyu and the court, which answers the mounting uprisings with a newly raised army. Huang Xing returns from time abroad, where he studied modern military methods, and throws himself into the armed struggle.

Jackie Chan directs and stars as Huang Xing, appearing alongside Li Bingbing, Joan Chen, Jaycee Chan, Jiang Wu and Hu Ge. The screenplay is by Wang Xing-Dong and Chen Bao-Guang, with Wang Zhebin producing. It is the thirteenth of the fourteen films Chan has directed, made between Jackie Chan: My Story and Chinese Zodiac. The production had a budget of about 30 million US dollars and returned roughly 4 million US dollars worldwide.

Audience reception has been mixed. On IMDb the film holds 5.7 out of 10 from around 6,800 votes, and on TMDB it also stands at 5.7 from about 170 votes. A critics' rating of 4 out of 10, based on 24 reviews, places it below those audience scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • When the revolutionary leader is on an ocean liner heading to China, the lifeboats on deck are too modern: they are brightly orange and have built-in engines. The film is set in 1911, and lifeboats at that time were non-motorized boats, typically painted white.
  • The black-red-gold flags of Germany, shown in some scenes, were not used until after 1949. In 1911, German flags should have been black-white-red.
  • Initially, the film was titled '1911' in Russia, but it was later restored to its original name.
  • 'The Fall of the Last Empire' is Jackie Chan's 100th film.
