Tyrannosaur

Joseph is a man in a Glasgow council estate whose wife has died, and whose anger and drinking have left him isolated and prone to violence. After an outburst brings him into contact with Hannah, a devout Christian who works in a charity shop, the two form an unlikely friendship that slowly offers Joseph a way out of his self-destructive rut. What he takes at first for a sheltered, untroubled life turns out to be something else entirely: Hannah is carrying a private burden of her own, and the connection between them comes at a heavy cost to both.

Tyrannosaur is the feature directing debut of Paddy Considine, who also wrote the screenplay; it was released in 2011, seven years before his second film as director, Journeyman. Peter Mullan plays Joseph and Olivia Colman plays Hannah, with Eddie Marsan, Ned Dennehy, Samuel Bottomley and Paul Popplewell among a credited cast of twenty-two. Diarmid Scrimshaw produced, and the film was made in the United Kingdom by Film4 Productions, Screen Yorkshire, Inflammable Films and Warp X.

The film runs 87 minutes and blends drama with romance. It holds a 7.5 rating on IMDb from around 35,000 votes and a 7.2 on TMDB from roughly 524 votes, while its critics' rating stands at 7.4 from 86 reviews. Those figures suggest a film that drew a substantial audience and was received about as warmly by reviewers as by the public.
