Chronicle follows three teenage friends whose lives change after they come into contact with a strange crystalline object found underground. Andrew, Matt and Steve soon discover they can move objects with their minds, and they spend their early days testing and enjoying abilities that set them apart from everyone around them. As their powers grow stronger, the thrill gives way to tension, and the darker impulses within the group begin to surface, pulling their friendship and their ordinary lives apart.
The film is the first feature directed by Josh Trank, who wrote the screenplay with Max Landis and went on to direct Fantastic Four and Capone. Dane DeHaan plays Andrew, with Alex Russell as Matt, Michael B. Jordan as Steve and Michael Kelly as Richard Detmer. Shot as a found-footage drama blending science fiction and thriller elements, it runs a lean 84 minutes.
Made for around 12 million dollars, Chronicle took in roughly 127 million worldwide, a strong return on a modest production. Audiences rate it at 7 out of 10 on IMDb from some 277,000 votes and 6.9 out of 10 on TMDB, while a film critics' rating of 7.1 from 187 reviews places it in similar territory, with professional and general viewers largely in agreement.
