Peter von Kant

Peter von Kant is a successful film director living in Cologne in the mid-1970s, sharing his home with Karl, an assistant he treats badly and humiliates. When his old friend and muse, the actress Sidonie, introduces him to Amir, a handsome young man of limited means, Peter falls for him at once. He invites Amir to live with him and uses his position to help the younger man get a start in the film industry. The plan works, and Amir becomes a star within months, but once he has made his name he ends the relationship, leaving Peter to confront his own obsessions and self-destructive tendencies, which also fall on his mother Rosemarie and the loyal Karl. The story is a loose adaptation of Rainer Werner Fassbinder's play The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant, with the gender of the central characters changed.

François Ozon wrote and produced the film as well as directing it. It is the seventeenth of the twenty features he has directed in chronological order, following Everything Went Fine and preceding The Crime Is Mine. Denis Ménochet plays Peter, with Isabelle Adjani as Sidonie, Khalil Ben Gharbia as Amir, Hanna Schygulla as Rosemarie, Stefan Crepon as Karl and Aminthe Audiard as Gabrielle.

The film runs eighty-five minutes and was released in July 2022. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.3 from around 2,900 votes, while on TMDB its rating is 5.8 from far fewer votes. A critics' rating of 6.8 from fifty-eight reviews places it somewhat above the audience scores.
