Short description

Om Shanti Om is a Bollywood comedy-drama with thriller elements, directed by Farah Khan from a screenplay she wrote with Mushtaq Sheikh. It was produced by Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan through Red Chillies Entertainment alongside Eros International. Shah Rukh Khan plays Om Prakash Makhija, a small-time background actor in 1970s Bombay who dreams of stardom with his friend Pappu, played by Shreyas Talpade. He falls for the established star Shantipriya, played by Deepika Padukone, but a fire at the studio where they are working kills them both. Thirty years later he is reborn as Om Kapoor, a successful star, and sets out to uncover what happened in that earlier life. Arjun Rampal plays the film producer Mukesh Mehra, with Kirron Kher as Om's mother Bela and Javed Sheikh as Rajesh Kapoor.

Farah Khan's second film as director followed Main Hoon Na (2004) and preceded Happy New Year (2014). It was made for about 9 million USD and earned roughly 38 million USD worldwide, a strong return. On IMDb it holds 7.6/10 from 38 votes and on TMDB 7.1/10 from 420 votes; a film critics' rating of 7.1/10 from 20 reviews sits in line with audience scores. The production credits 88 cast members and 70 crew, reflecting its large-scale Bollywood setting.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Actor Vivek Oberoi was the first choice for the role of Mukesh Mehra, but he declined. Ultimately, the role went to actor Arjun Rampal.
  • The 1970s cars used in the film originally belonged to Rajesh Khanna and Hema Malini.
