The Five Devils

Vicky, a young girl living with her parents in a French mountain town by a lake, has an unusual gift: she can detect and reproduce any scent she chooses, storing the results in carefully labelled jars. She is intensely close to her mother, Joanne, and among her collected smells she keeps one of her. When her aunt Julia returns to town after a prison sentence, Vicky sets out to capture the woman's scent as well. Doing so pulls her into memories of the past, through which she uncovers secrets her village, her family and her own life have kept hidden.

The Five Devils is a French drama directed by Léa Mysius, who wrote the screenplay with Paul Guilhaume. It was her second feature, following Ava, and it arrived between that film and her later The Birthday Party. Adèle Exarchopoulos plays Joanne, with Sally Dramé as Vicky, Swala Emati as Julia, Moustapha Mbengue as Jimmy, Daphné Patakia as Nadine and Patrick Bouchitey as Joanne's father. The production, mounted for about 3 million dollars, credited 25 cast members and 66 crew.

The film drew a critics' rating of 7 out of 10 from 75 reviews, while audiences rated it 6.7 out of 10 on IMDb from 6,000 votes and 6.7 out of 10 on TMDB from 235 votes, a narrower gap between critical and audience responses. It runs 96 minutes and blends drama with fantasy and thriller elements.
