The Guilt Trip

Andy Brewster is a chemist who has developed a new cleaning product and sets off across the country to pitch it to companies. He invites his mother, Joyce, a widow he has barely seen in years, to ride along with him. What Andy keeps to himself is that he has another reason for the trip: he wants to bring Joyce back together with a man she loved long ago. Joyce has her own hidden motive, believing she is partly to blame for her son's troubles in his love life and hoping the journey will help her put things right. On the road, her talkative, overbearing manner clashes with his reserved temperament, but the long drive gradually brings the two closer.

Anne Fletcher directed the film, her fourth feature after Step Up, 27 Dresses and The Proposal. Dan Fogelman wrote the screenplay, and Lorne Michaels was among the producers. Seth Rogen plays Andy opposite Barbra Streisand as Joyce, with Yvonne Strahovski, Colin Hanks, Brett Cullen and Adam Scott in supporting roles. The production cost about 40 million dollars and took in roughly 42 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 5.8 from 42,000 votes and on TMDB 5.6 from 784 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 5.1 from 124 reviews, so audiences rated it somewhat more kindly than reviewers did.
