EVANGELION: DEATH (TRUE)² is a Japanese animated film compiled from the television series Neon Genesis Evangelion. Set fifteen years after a catastrophic event, it follows a group of fourteen-year-old pilots who are assigned to operate large humanoid machines known as Evangelions, guided by psychologically troubled adults who command them. Their mission is to fight hostile beings called Angels. Rather than unfolding in chronological order, the film rearranges events by grouping them around individual characters, accompanied by classical music.
The film is a reworked version of an earlier theatrical compilation, assembled by several directors including Hideaki Anno, Masayuki, Tensai Okamura and Kazuya Tsurumaki, with a screenplay by Anno, Shinji Higuchi and Hiroshi Yamaguchi. It appeared in 1998, the same year as Revival of Evangelion, and sits within a run of Evangelion theatrical releases from the late 1990s. Voices include Megumi Ogata as Shinji Ikari, Kotono Mitsuishi as Misato Katsuragi, Yuko Miyamura as Asuka Langley Soryu and Akira Ishida as Kaworu Nagisa, among others.
The film runs sixty-nine minutes and was produced in Japan by Toei Company, GAINAX, Production I.G and Tatsunoko Production. On TMDB it holds a rating of 6.8 out of 10 from 126 votes, indicating a modest but positive response from those who have logged it.
